Paper.io

Claim territory — but don't let anyone cross your trail! Arrow keys or WASD.

About Paper.io

Paper.io is an online multiplayer territory-capture game developed by Voodoo and released in 2016. It became one of the fastest-growing casual browser games ever, reaching tens of millions of daily players within months. The concept blends the classic Snake mechanic (don't run into yourself) with a territory-claiming system: you draw loops to claim land, and your tail is vulnerable until you close the loop back to your base.

The strategic depth is surprisingly rich for such a simple-looking game. Aggressive players can sabotage enemies by cutting through their trails, but overextending exposes your own trail to counterattack. The optimal strategy shifts moment to moment based on where opponents are and how much blank space remains.

How to Play Paper.io

  • Use Arrow keys or WASD to move your cyan square
  • Move into blank territory to start drawing a trail
  • Return to your own colored zone to close the loop and claim the enclosed area
  • Your trail is vulnerable — if an enemy crosses it, you die instantly
  • Eliminate enemies by running over their trail while they're away from base
  • Claim 50% territory or eliminate all bots to win

Winning Strategy

  • Small fast loops: Claim land in small loops close to your base — safer than large risky sweeps
  • Watch enemy trails: If an enemy is far from their base, cut their trail for an easy kill
  • Defend borders: Don't let bots claim land next to your zone — they'll push you into a corner
  • Aggressive expansion: Use diagonal sweeps to enclose large empty areas quickly

Beginner Mistakes to Avoid

  • Overextending: Going too far from your base makes your trail long and easy to cut
  • Ignoring your back: Always keep attention on your exposed trail behind you
  • Hesitating: Pausing mid-trail gives enemies time to react and cut you off
  • Staying too safe: Small loops are safer but won't give you the territory needed to win
